Athletics

Student at Saint Leo the Great are encouraged to join athletics. There is a wide variety of sports offered to our students through St. Leo the Great, the Crusaders Youth Activities Association (CYAA), through Lancaster Catholic High School at the junior high level, and cooperative agreements with other local private schools, as well as the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO).

Saint Leo the Great students, as well as SLTG PSR participants  are provided with an opportunity to participate in athletics while learning to embody Catholic values, good sportsmanship, and teamwork, develop the fundamentals basketball, and have fun.

The CYAA is an association formed to provide youth sports to Catholic families in the Lancaster Area. Through this Mission, the goal is to provide a strong Catholic program to develop our children in a Christ-like manner while also striving to perform at the highest level. Through this Mission, the goal is to be the strongest youth program in the area.

Baseball is offered in the Fall at U8, U10, U12, and U14 levels. Fall baseball is instructional. Section 1 is for more experienced players, section 2 is for those that are new to the age level. The season starts in early September and runs through early October. Games are double headers on either Saturday or Sunday. Fields used are at St Leo and possibly Lancaster Catholic.

Softball is offered in the Fall and Spring. The Fall season runs from the week after Labor Day to the end of October. All games are either Saturday mornings or Sunday afternoons and are double headers. Practices vary by team, usually 1 weeknight and Saturdays. Practice times are set once teams and coaches are defined. The fields are at St. Leo & Lancaster Catholic.

Football Midget football is offered to students in grades 4, 5, 6, and 7 in the fall.

Games are either Saturday night or Sunday Afternoon. Starts beginning of August and runs until mid November. Home games played at Lancaster Catholic, normally on the turf field. The football director is Chris Maiorino (LCHS Head Football Coach).

Flag football is offered to students in grades K through 6 in the fall and spring.

Cheerleading is offered for grades 2-8. Cheerleading participates at midget football games, and winter basketball.

CYAA Crusaders Youth Soccer is a recreational soccer program open to boys and girls attending Catholic elementary schools or registered in religious education at a Lancaster County parish.In continuous existence since the mid-1980s, CYAA soccer welcomes kids of all abilities to join teams organized by age and coached by volunteers from different parishes—all of whom must have Diocesan clearances.As a recreational program, our goal is to ensure that every player has fun, learns the fundamental and technical skills of the game and develops teamwork and sportsmanship qualities. There are no tryouts and all players receive ample playing time.

Basketball. SLTG is also a member of the Lancaster CYO (Catholic Youth Organization) and Central Penn CYO Leagues. Basketball Games are played against other Catholic Schools in the Lancaster and Harrisburg Deaneries. Teams also have the opportunity to participate in tournaments sponsored within the Harrisburg Diocese.

Junior High/Co-op Programs through Lancaster Catholic High School

Soccer and Field Hockey. In May of 2020 Lancaster Catholic announced new co-ops at the junior high level to provide a broader more competitive and improved developmental experience for our 7th & 8th grade students in all Lancaster parish schools. A co-operative agreement with Lancaster Country Day (LCD) in junior high soccer and with LCD and Lancaster Mennonite (LMH) in junior high field hockey was established to provide opportunities for more of our Catholic school junior high age students to participate developmentally in these sports. There is no fee to participate and practices will be held at Lancaster Country Day (soccer) or Lancaster Mennonite (field hockey). Games are either hosted by the home school or held at Lancaster Lebanon League schools.

Cross Country/Track and Field Cross Country is offered to boys and girls in grades 7th and 8th to participate on the Lancaster Catholic Junior High team in the Fall. For grade school, Track and Field is held as a one-time meet in early May of each year. More details to follow.
